- "The Flor Contemplacion Story" wins the Golden Pyramid (Best Film) at the Cairo International Film Festival. Nora Aunor, for her performance in the movie, also won as Best Actress.

- (June 2) Acclaimed director and National Artist Ishmael Bernal dies
1998
- "Jose Rizal," the most expensive Filipino movie ever made, premieres in theaters.
- "Jose Rizal," directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya, is included in the Panorama Section of the Berlin International Film Festival.
1999
- The 1st Cinemanila International Film Festival, was held.
- The Film Ratings Board was reactivated.
2000
- Raymond Red's "Anino" wins the Palm d'Or for short films at the Cannes International Film Festival.
2001
- "Batang Westside," the longest Filipino film ever made (5 hours), premiered.
- Acclaimed director Marilou Diaz-Abaya, is awarded the Arts and Culture Prize at the 12th Fukuoka Arts and Culture Prizes.
